Ionosphere

Scintillation

Ionospheric scintillation is measured using specialized GNSS receivers. The receivers compute indices that describe the strength of scintillation in the received positioning signals: S4 for amplitude scintillation and Phi60 for phase scintillation. In the scintillation calculations, only signals from positioning satellites observed at elevation above 30 degrees are used.

Map

The geographic location of the more common phase scintillation at high latitudes, calculated at an altitude of 350 km.

Stations

Station-specific plots for amplitude and phase scintillation. In the plots, individual points represent the scintillation of a single satellite signal over a one-minute interval. The plots also indicate the threshold values used by aviation space weather centers for moderate (MOD) and severe (SEV) scintillation.
